Telecommuting – Maybe society just isn’t ready?

September 17, 2008

This Article about Telecommuting in the September 7 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle is an excellent overview of the issues surrounding telecommuting not only from a management perspective but from an employee perspective. It demonstrates the fact that society has not quite caught up with technology at least on a corporate level.

Attitudes on both sides are evolving and I think they will eventually catch up with technology. There are many variables involved however, from economic issues to social ones. So, at least, for now, if you truly want to work from home, working as an independent contractor may be your best course of action.

Working as a Virtual Assistant allows you the freedom to work with like-minded individuals. Many former employees are allowing their inner entrepreneur to emerge because they are ready to embrace the technology and the benefits it brings to their life style. Those entrepreneurs are very skilled at the work they do but they aren’t skilled at the general administrative work that must be done. That’s were Virtual Assistants become a vital part of their business.

When you bring current technology and the current economic climate together with a society no longer willing to play by traditional corporate rules, you get an environment ripe for virtual business solutions. If you are ready to move forward and create the lifestyle you want, then Virtual Assisting may be for you. By the time telecommuting becomes mainstream, you might already be retired!

If it’s all Common Sense, why aren’t we all doing it all the time?

The Success Principles

By Jack Canfield and Janet Switzer

When they did the pre-release publicity on this I must have had emails from every corner of the internet touting how wonderful it was going to be. I was even invited to a free teleseminar where Jack Canfield gave a fairly in depth review of the main points. I knew when I heard about it that there wouldn’t be anything in it I didn’t already know. I knew it would be common sense stuff. So why did I get it?

Well, gee, it’s Jack Canfield! I was given an audio version of the original Chicken Soup for the Soul book by an old neighbor and I fell in love. I even watched my daughter, who at the time was pretty cynical for a 13 year old fall in love with the stories. From there we devoured more – she read Chicken Soup for the Teenagers Soul and I cried through Chicken Soup for the Mothers Soul. So I knew that there would be something special about this book.

And no, I was not at all disappointed. Yes, I knew it. No, I did not always do it. Yes, this book is a must read. Why? Funny you should ask!

It helps you do what you know you could do but don’t always do. When I read it, I was amazed to think things like; duh! - How could I have forgotten to do that? And wow, I never thought about that in that way. The little tips, tricks and twists are truly enlightening and inspiring. I read the book through once and did all of the exercises; they were fun! And then I did it again and again.
